What superpower would you love to have? Hands down, it would be teleportation. Having that power would eliminate planes, trains and automobiles. No more fill-ups, no more TSA lines and no more elbow to elbow seating. Beam me up, Scotty.

What’s your favorite thing to do outside of work? Maui, Hawaii for vacations; the local So Cal beaches for sunshine; a long ride on PCH in our old British roadster; a bit of tinkering in our garage; cooking dinner on the grill; reading the Wall Street Journal in the mornings over breakfast; and hanging poolside with the family.

What’s your favorite childhood memory? From 1959 to 1969, our family lived on the northern tip of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula in the coastal town of Cheboygan. Every summer through 1969, my dad participated as a crew member on his friend’s sailboat in the Chicago Yacht Club to Mackinac Island Race, the world’s longest (333 miles) fresh water boat race and straight up Lake Michigan. Upon completing every race, the crew would sail the 20 miles over from Mackinac Island and moor near our mainland home town on Lake Huron. Then, for a week or more, they would teach us youngsters how to sail a Cal 36 on the Straits of Mackinac where Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Mackinac Island, Bois Blanc and Round Islands all merge, and where a couple of Great Lakes lighthouses were situated. We’d sail for hours doing tacking, jibing, close hauling, different reaches and spinnaker runs, circling lighthouses and dodging iron ore ships on their way to South Bend from the Minnesota ore fields. Once, while under sail and being the lightest aboard, I was hauled up to the top of the mast in a bosun’s chair to fix a halyard. Over the years, there were several instances of learning to sail in foul weather. All in all, there was a lot of excitement, work and good learning for a grammar school kid. On the other hand, the après sail boat cleaning was not nearly as much fun.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go? Depending on the time of the year: to England, along the Thames River near and around St. James, London; to Hamilton, Bermuda in the mid-Atlantic; to the eastern or western shorelines of the Straits of Mackinac in Northern Michigan; to Western Maui’s Kaanapali Beach; to the British Virgin Islands; to French Polynesia and, to almost any of the beaches in Southern California.

What’s your favorite thing to do on a rainy day? Prepare a pot of a hearty, homemade soup from scratch for dinner, pull a good book from a shelf in our library, and lounge the day away reading until dinner time when the soup has simmered for just long enough.

What’s your go-to meal? Begin with a shaken, London dry gin martini with olives. First up on the meal is a simple dinner salad, with croutons, and tossed with an Italian vinaigrette. The main course is a halibut steak with summer vegetables — all of which is cooked on a Weber grill — and accompanied by rice pilaf. Wines are either a California Cabernet or Merlot. Jamoca Almond Fudge ice cream is a dessert that never disappoints. Then an espresso coffee, with half and half, and perhaps finish with a wee bit of ruby port.

What’s your favorite book? I enjoy well-researched and written historical biographies. All of Ronald Chernow’s biographies are excellent. In addition, biographical accounts of the life and times of Winston S. Churchill by Messrs. Gilbert, Jenkins, Johnson, Manchester, Meacham and Arnn, among others, are all well-written volumes about that famous British leader. Histories by Victor Davis Hansen, Paul Johnson, Robert Massie and Doris Kearn Goodwin are good reads as well.
